What inspires you about South Africa’s art scene?

I was privileged to study Fine Art alongside a cohort of artists who have gone on to achieve international recognition, and I continue to find inspiration in their commitment to art-making and art-thinking. Theirs is a career that takes singular vision and dogged determination. Following my undergraduate degree – and with the distinct sense that I was not destined to be an artist – I did a Masters in creative writing. I have since found myself uniquely positioned to write about art and artists from South Africa and beyond.

What are some unique elements of Cape Town art?

I am particularly drawn to Cape Town-based artists whose practices pair slow labour with a spiritual enquiry. Artists like Bronwyn Katz and Igshaan Adams offer material engagements with the metaphysical; many of their works are formed through repetitive, almost meditative processes.

Where can visitors experience the essence of the local art scene?

Cape Town’s art scene consists of private museums, like Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) and the Norval Foundation, public institutions such as the Iziko South African National Gallery, commercial galleries and the occasional project space. To experience a true expression of contemporary art in the city, I recommend visiting a selection of these different art spaces, which each offer audiences diverse encounters with artists, both established and emerging.

Which local artists are doing interesting work?

Few local artists are doing uninteresting work, which leaves rather a long list! But if I were pressed to make a selection, it might begin with Bronwyn Katz and Igshaan Adams, who I mentioned above, and end with Zander Blom – with many other artists in between.
