What’s one of your favourite memories from your time at KidsOnly?

Michelle: Working during the soccer World Cup in 2010. All the colleagues learnt to dance the 2010 Diski Dance, and we could hear the fans blowing their vuvuzelas as they walked along the Waterfront. The energy, or as we say the “gees” (spirit), around the resort was incredible!

Melissa: Playing Uno with two siblings from Germany. Neither of them could understand or speak English and unfortunately, I don’t understand or speak German. However, this never seemed to bother them because they always included me in their conversations and asked me questions constantly. I’m not sure how many of my answers matched the questions they asked or even if our sides of the conversation were on the same topic, but they were happy with what I had to contribute.

What’s your favourite activity to do with the children at KidsOnly?

Melissa: I love building Lego with them. It’s an activity that doesn’t need any language or explanation, so it doesn’t matter what language they speak, we can all just have a good time.

Michelle: For me, it’s creating a beaded lizard with them. At first, they can’t always see what they are making, but at the end they are so amazed at the finished product!

What are the top qualities you need to work at KidsOnly?

Melissa: To be patient, creative, enthusiastic, resourceful and to think on your feet.

Michelle: I think you need to be a good communicator, and to have empathy, creativity, adaptability and perseverance.

We’re sure KidsOnly keeps you very busy, but what do you both like to do when you’re not at work?

Melissa: Read. There is nothing better than losing yourself in a good book.

Michelle: In my spare time I volunteer as an Adult Leader in the Girl Guides. At home, I love reading, knitting or watching cricket.

Do you have a favourite spot within the resort?

Michelle: My favourite place is on the island, where you tend to forget you are in the middle of a city as it is so peaceful.

Melissa: For me it’s KidsOnly – that’s where we have the most fun!
