South Africa, Cape Town, September 2017; Just in time for summer, Nobu at One&Only Cape Town has introduced a Japanese sunnaku, or snack, menu. In Japan, ’sunnaku’ refers to a snack bar that serves light, bite-sized meals to enjoy at the end of the day, in-between meals or to accompany a favourite drink. Offered exclusively in the intimate and sophisticated Nobu Lounge, the new menu is available daily between 16h30 and 19h30 and includes smaller, lighter tastes of some of the most popular signature dishes from the Nobu restaurant menu. The snack-sized offering goes hand-in-hand with a line-up of speciality drinks, personally chosen by Nobu general manager and experienced sommelier Carl Habel. Easy to navigate, it includes some of the best sakes exclusive to Nobu, Japanese beers, Champagne and sparkling wines, and the restaurant’s inventive, wildly popular martini cocktails. The full Nobu wine and drinks menu is also available, and a full-time sommelier is in attendance to assist with pairing suggestions.
Short and sharp, the Sunnaku menu features the likes of fresh oysters, spicy miso tacos, sashimi salad skewers, wagyu beef sliders on a tofu bun with truffle aioli, and umami chicken wings with miso salt. Of course, new-style sashimi and rock shrimp have not been excluded. As tables at Nobu, especially during the busy summer months, are often reserved well in advance, the Nobu Lounge purposefully does not take reservations. Space in the sleek, sophisticated bar and lounge above the restaurant is available on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis, which means that if you get there early enough it’s a perfect meeting place for a spontaneous late-afternoon drink or early evening snack. Whether one or two dishes are ordered to share with pre-dinner drinks or a more generous selection of plates add up to an impromptu dinner, it’s an easy and quick way to enjoy the Nobu experience without having to plan ahead. The Sunnaku menu encapsulates Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s highly respected modern approach to Japanese cuisine with a Peruvian twist, characterised by exquisitely balanced flavours and textures and artful presentation, maximising fresh, seasonal ingredients.
