Chef Reuben Riffel and his team at his restaurant at One&Only Cape Town have once again joined forces with some of South Africa’s finest wine estates and winemakers for a series of monthly wine and dine events throughout the year. Chef Reuben has selected the Cape’s finest to embark with him and sommelier Luvo Ntezo on a quest for the perfect food and wine-matches. The results of their endeavours will be served as a deluxe 5-course dinner on the last Wednesday of every month. Hosted by the ever-delightful One&Only brand ambassador, Aubrey Ngcungama, guests can look forward to wonderful evenings in the company of great food, wine and friends.
Starting the year off on 25 February is Johan Kruger from Stellenbosch winery, Sterhuis. Johan has made wine at several famous estates over the years and the accolades awarded to this, his own venture, are testament to his immense winemaking talent. He is followed on 24 March by one of the legends of South African wine, Anthony Hamilton Russell and the team from Hamilton Russell Vineyards. This cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde pioneer makes some of the finest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in the country, and will entertain with tales of his travels spent spreading the word around the world.
Joining Reuben on 28 April will be Clayton Reabow from Franschhoek-based Môreson Wines. Clayton is one of the drivers behind the newly-founded Franschhoek Appellation Grand Prestige association aimed at showcasing the regions’ terroir-focussed wines and his range of fine MCCs, Chardonnays and more illustrate this to perfection. The following month, on 26 May, Reuben will welcome Schalk Burger & Sons to One&Only Cape Town. This Wellington-based winery of the famous rugby-playing family concentrates on hearty red wines, perfect with Reuben’s warming cuisine.
30 June sees Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year, JD Pretorius, and Steenberg Wines joining Reuben for a wonderful evening celebrating JD’s winning Merlot and more, all perfectly-matched to robust foods. Towards the end of July is a veritable treat as Morgenster Estate, with winemaker Henry Kotze, brings a fabulous vertical masterclass of top Bordeaux-style blends going back over the years. Some of the Cape’s finest examples, the Morgenster Estate Wine and second-label Lourens Valley wines, are both excellent partners for food and the opportunity to try older, well-cellared wines is definitely not to be missed.
Pieter Ferreira of Graham Beck Wines is celebrating his 25th vintage at the cellars this year and members of the winemaking team will be continuing the year-long celebrations at Reuben’s on 25 August with some of the fabulous wines produced by the farm. And following the rugby-theme in May, another sporting legend’s wines will be on show on 29 September when Ernie Els Wines, with winemaker Louis Strydom, brings their range of stellar red wines to the table. Guests can expect plenty of elegant Cabernets and spicy Shirazes on this evening.
The last two months of the series showcase one of South Africa’s newer winemaking stars as well as one of the most iconic. On 27 October, Bruwer Raats will be showing the Raats Family Wines, most of which are made from the Loire varietals (Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc), which made him famous. Hailed as the best Cab Franc producer in the Southern Hemisphere by no less than Jancis Robinson MW, a tasting by this passionate and enthusiastic winemaker is always a treat. To round off this incredible series of dinners, a Cape legend for years – Klein Constantia and winemaker Matt Day will be joining Reuben on 24 November for a tasting of their carefully-crafted red and white wines, with hopefully a sip or two of the iconic Vin de Constance. An exciting programme of great entertainment, outstanding wines and astounding food.
