History and Culture

Where gorillas roam and beauty abounds.

“The sense of exhilaration I felt when viewing the heartland of the Virungas for the first time… I have made my home among the mountain gorillas.” ~ Dian Fossey, Gorillas in the Mist

Rwanda is a country distinguished by beauty and hope. Home to warm, friendly communities, flourishing mountain forests, and sparkling blue lakes. Unique flora and fauna that thrive with concerted conservation, including its most famous resident– the majestic mountain gorilla.

Less than nine-hundred are said to exist on the planet, and Rwanda is one of only three countries where you can encounter them. Their lush mountain reserve, Volcanoes National Park, was hailed as the first national park in Africa, created in 1925 by Belgian colonists. The expanded area now covers 160 square kilometres and is a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, embracing evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp, and heath. It contains five of the eight Virunga volcanoes, named Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo.

In the 1960s, the park became a base for American naturalist Dian Fossey, known for her determined plight against gorilla poaching. Her Karisoke Research Centre thrives today, and the story lives on thanks to Hollywood movie ‘Gorillas in the Mist’, inspired by her autobiography.

But the allure of this region doesn’t stop at gorillas. With an authentic cultural village, a myriad of captivating hiking trails, cave systems, over 165 bird species, and numerous mammals including rare golden monkeys, it’s a haven that must be seen to be believed.

With a sumptuous spa, world-class cuisine, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences through magical rainforest, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest is a rare haven that indulges the body and inspires the soul.

This activity is available for children over the age of 15 years.
