Raising the standards for exquisite food and wine events, Nobu at One&Only Cape Town looks forward to providing the ultimate dining experience with the announcement of its programme of elegant dining events for 2015. Each month, the restaurant will host some of South Africa, and the world’s, finest wines and champagne, paired with passion, taste and flair to Head Chef Dil Tamang’s and Head Sushi Chef Keisuke “Keke” Itoh’s delightful contemporary Asian cuisine.
Assisting in the pairing and service of both events will be Nobu’s highly regarded wine steward, Mercy Mwai. Kenyan-born Mercy was recently named ‘Up-and-Coming Wine Steward of the Year’ at the Inter-Hotel Challenge and she has relished the chance to test her creativity and love of food and wine to make some imaginative and delicious pairings over the coming months. With the evenings hosted by charismatic MC and One&Only Cape Town’s effervescent ambassador Aubrey Ngcungama, Nobu’s food and wine events promise an unbeatable combination of the very finest food, wine, flavours and flair.
The high standard of Nobu’s fine dining programme is clear from the very start with a trio of some of the world’s best-loved champagnes playing host at the beginning of the year. On 12 February, Taittinger will be showcasing French sophistication and style as they match their range of champagnes to Nobu’s delicately layered food. In March, Moët et Chandon will be showcased on 4 March. For more than 270 years, Moët has been supplying champagne to the crowned heads of Europe, including their current Royal Warrant from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II of England, and Nobu chefs have created a truly royal feast to pair with such noble champagnes.
For the third month in a row, Nobu will welcome a champagne house to their restaurant, and on 7 April it’s the turn of Veuve Clicquot. With its famous ‘yellow label’, this champagne pays tribute to one of the first ladies of Champagne, Madame Clicquot herself. Also suppliers to the British Royal Household, Veuve traditionally pairs well with food, and the chefs will have some delicious combinations in store for guests.
Closer to home, the dinner on 7 May will be showcasing the South African wines of Oneiric from picturesque Elgin. The farm’s name means ‘pertaining to dreams’, and owners Matt and Jennifer Pascall and their team look forward to sharing theirs with guests whilst indulging in the exciting combinations of food and wine. Following this new, exciting producer, is one of South Africa’s iconic brands and best-loved names in wine. Rust en Vrede Estate joins Nobu at One&Only Cape Town on 4 June when winemaker Coenie Snyman will be showcasing their premium, handcrafted red wines alongside robust cuisine.
July sees the return of Pieter Ferreira and his Graham Beck Methode Cap Classique’s. Pieter is celebrating his 25th harvest at Graham Beck and will be sharing highlights of a career splashed with awards, accolades and spectacular achievements on 2 July. A raconteur of note, this promises to be a very special night for all. Elgin is an area originally feted for only Sauvignon Blanc, but Burgundy-lovers Paul Cluver Wines, who will be hosting the dinner on 6 August, are changing minds and attitudes with their range of fine Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. These elegant, almost ethereal wines are particularly suited to Nobu’s style of cooking and this evening promises to be a feast for all gourmands.
Hartenberg Estate welcomes guests on 3 September with a fresh and appetising menu perfectly paired with their wide range of wines. From arguably the country’s finest Riesling to some of the most celebrated Shirazes, cellarmaster Carl Schultz will take guests on a culinary journey accompanied by his favourite vintages. Heading back to international waters, on 1 October Nobu at One&Only Cape Town welcomes Italy’s finest Prosecco producers, Bottega Distillery, to their shores. From their home in the Veneto, the Bottega family produces a range of outstanding sparkling wines and delicious grappas and liqueurs, which will be enjoyed in a series of innovative and exciting pairings.
The final guest for the Nobu’s wine and dine evenings needs no introduction. André van Rensburg and Vergelegen Wines produce some of the country’s top Bordeaux blends – both red and white – which have been locally and internationally-acclaimed at a number of competitions and awards. An entertaining, outspoken but essentially modest man, André exudes passion and love for his wines, perfectly echoing the sentiments of the Nobu team, in an evening of splendid food and outstanding wine on 3 December.
The three extraordinary champagne dinners in February, March and April are R895 per person and include a four-course dinner. The handpicked four-course wine evenings are R495 per person. The Nobu One&Only Cape Town Wine & Dine Calendar is strictly limited as to numbers and reservations in advance are essential.
